Insurance Information
Life Insurance
Every full-time Peel secondary teacher automatically has two term
life insurance policies. These policies include:
- $100,000 policy from Manulife
through our benefits agreement. Teachers have the option of increasing coverage
by up to 8 units of $25,000 each, self-paid upon application.
- A life policy
included in the LTD package from Teachers Life. The amount of life insurance
varies depending on the level of coverage selected. Long-term disability
coverage is self-paid (see section on LTD).
Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance
- LTD plan administered by Teachers Life (416) 620-1140
- the
Peel Board pays the administrative cost while each teacher pays the premium
cost
- Basic plan is a condition of employment and includes short term,
long term and term life benefits
- Supplemental coverage is available
on a self-paid basis by application. New hires do not need to supply a
medical within the first 60 days to get supplemental insurance.
- LTD
is normally accessed when sick leave runs out. Since there is a qualifying
waiting period, members requiring LTD should contact the Benefits and Retirement
Counsellor three months prior to running out of sick days.
- Upon
presentation of medical evidence, Teachers Life will assess whether the
teacher qualifies for disability.
- If completely disabled from teaching, the plan provides
24 months of tax-free income dependant upon your level of coverage.
- Also includes a $48,000 term life policy
- You may cancel your LTD
after attaining your factor 85 or after turning 65.
