TPA Checklist

Being evaluated? Here is a quick reference checklist to help you succeed.

Notification

  • The evaluator must notify you within 20 school days of the beginning of your evaluation year. You should be evaluated at least once every 5 years.
  • If your administrator has informed you she/he is conducting a discretionary TPA, you are advised to contact the District 19 office.

Preparation

  • Read Policy 35 on the Board intranet.
  • Prepare a draft Annual Learning Plan (ALP). The ALP should include one objective that you can meet in the current year, which fits your professional growth.
  • Prepare any materials your evaluator may request to demonstrate non-classroom competencies (artifacts).

Pre-Conference

  • Ensure that you have been given sufficient time to prepare requested materials.
  • The evaluator MUST BE AN ADMINISTRATOR (not a department head or other colleague).
  • Discuss focus competencies to be assessed in the classroom observation.
  • Discuss the draft ALP.
  • Set a firm date for your observation.
  • Complete the Pre-Observation Meeting Form (Appendix C). Request a copy BEFORE your observation. Sign the form when it is completed.

Classroom Observation

  • The evaluator must not assign ranking to “look-fors” or require that all “look-fors” be observed.
  • Only the 16 competencies are to be evaluated.
  • The evaluation should focus on what was observed in your classroom.

Post-Observation Meeting

  • Register any objections to the process (eg. insufficient time to prepare or notice given).
  • Evaluate your evaluation:
    • is the assessment fair and based on objective, observable criteria?
    • are all comments valid?
  • Insist on viewing all parental and student input that was considered and respond if necessary.
  • Complete and sign the Post-Observation Meeting Form (Appendix D) and obtain a copy. Add comments if necessary.
  • Finalize your ALP. Remember the ALP is YOUR plan. While you must consult with the Principal you do not have to modify your plan to suit school administrators.

Summative Report

  • When you receive the Summative Report Form (Appendix E), read it over. If you have concerns about the report, bring them up and ask for changes. You will be asked to sign the Summative Report Form, indicating receipt.
  • If you have concerns about the comments, call the District 19 office.

If you receive an unsatisfactory rating or you are put on review:

  • Call the District 19 office IMMEDIATELY! OSSTF District 19 Office (905) 564-7255
